Pawel
Born in Poland in 1978, Pawel Kominek grew up in Frankfurt, Germany. In 1997, he released his debut 12” single “biocenter” on Poets Club Records ran by Jan Peter Schwalm, a long-time producing partner of Brian Eno. A year later, the first 12”s under the name Turner were released on the label Ladomat Records in Hamburg and received instant success among the electronic music scene worldwide. In 2001, he started the new label dial-rec. with his friends Peter “Lawrence” Kersten and David “Carsten Jost” Lieske. Kominek has also produced several film soundtracks and remixes for artists such as Ellen Alien, Miss Kitten, Depeche Mode, etc.
As an addition to Dial Rec., in 2007 Paul started his own label Orphanear.
2010 saw the release of Pawel’s self-titled debut album. The album has received international critical acclaim with RA giving it a 4/5 and Canada’s own Exclaim! Magazine writing “This could easily be one of the best albums of 2010″ Pawel´s live performances are famous for combining the energetic minimal house & techno backings with his fabulous vocal skills, known from his previous releases.
Frivolous
Born and raised on a farm in isolated rural Canada, disassembling appliances and building strange gadgets where the only past-times that garnered young Gardner’s full attention until one semester a mysterious new course emerged into his stale and traditional school curriculum; Electronic Music Composition. Suddenly discovered, were honor roll grades, and a means to merge an imaginative young mind with over a decade of fiercely enforced classical piano training.
In 1996, captivated by Electronic music, unified dance floors and Detroit sounds, the 16- year-old embarked on a life-long love affair with the loop and took his first DJ residency at a Vancouver afterhours. After two successfully directionless years studying electronics and design, and after dabbling with some independent releases, Daniel decided to put his pride aside and demo his accomplishments. A CD-R of incomplete works were sent out as an experiment to 5 of the most esthetically innovative labels in Germany, and received back were 3 requests to release the material. The encouragement and new-found confidence led to the birth of the project FRIVOLOUS
Now with more than 40 releases and over a dozen 12″s to his name, Frivolous has toured the globe playing an eclectic array of venues and festivals along the way. His live shows have been hailed for their energy, originality and ingenuity as he’s taken the stage next to some of the most respected names in the business. Never compromising the art of showman-ship, these spectacles feature live keyboards and vocals as well as the incorporation of his DIY aesthetic. Integrating homemade devices such as the “Frivolous Patented Electromagnetic knife”, the “Broken-Ruler Music Box” and the Double “Cable-Tub” Bass, his music is injected with a sense of fantasy, imagination and personality scarcely found elsewhere in modern electronic dance music.
His latest full length Meteorology was released on Luciano’s Cadenza records this year.
Noah Pred
Producing dance music and performing live for the past ten years, Noah Pred emerged from Vancouver’s underground as a sought-after techno DJ with a sophisticated sound and unique style. Devoted to authentic and soulful strains of techno in all its permutations, Noah’s sound continues to evolve while remaining firmly driven by the dancefloor.
Since his first records were released, his productions have received international support, garnering critical acclaim while moving dancefloors across the globe. As a DJ and live act, he’s toured throughout Europe and North America, performing alongside such diverse artists as Josh Wink, Mathew Jonson, and James Holden. After a three-year stint in Montreal working for Consigned Recordings while holding a residency at Stereobar, Noah relocated to the West Coast to produce his field recording based techno full-length, ‘Ecocosm’, which was soon released on New Kanada.
Exploring his compositional versatility, Pred launched the Shen project in 2004. Geared towards digital downtempo, electronic dub and emotive IDM, Shen provided a creative outlet for productions that roam beyond the borders of clubland. Noah’s debut Shen full-length, ‘Outlines’, was released on Native State Records in late 2006.
Now based in Toronto, Pred has developed a loyal and devoted following for his potent DJ sets while running the digital imprint Thoughtless Music from his studio headquarters. His recent productions and remixes have been causing a buzz, and following high profile performances at last year’s MUTEK and Decibel festivals, Noah’s poised for exciting things in the year ahead – with his latest full-length ‘Blind Alignments’ out now on Thoughtless.
