About The Artists

PROSUMER – OstGut Ton/Panorama Bar Resident

Boris vs. Prosumer in SF Prosumer – Dance Under the Blue Mix
Prosumer Live at the Villa, Oslo Prosumer at Demented Djoon, Paris

Won’t you dance with me? This is of course a rhetorical question. There are few DJs that would rather get a yes. Since the Berliner-by-choice Prosumer lasciviously whispered this line on his second record and first genuine hit (The Craze for the revered Playhouse label), he grew to be one of the most impressive producers and DJs of today. His artist name stems from Alvin Toffler’s significant science-fiction book The Third Wave, which also inspired Juan Atkins to call his music “techno” and fuses “producer“ and “consumer” into one.

In reality, that’s what Prosumer does. He produces and consumes house music. Being the essence of his creative work, he deals with it in a way that is traditional, honest, up-front and most of all very personal. There are no limitations; stereotypes lose their impact and the supposedly very rigid formulary of house music, suddenly bears new entries. Of course, the base is rock-solid: Detroit, Chicago and New York are the twin cities that shaped his sound since he started playing records in the late nineties. But the Panorama Bar resident always has been one to accept ricochets from all kinds of camps, times and systems. The only rule: emotionality trumps effectiveness.

This is what makes his DJ-sets such rewarding experiences. Despite drawing from fifteen years of record shopping at Hard Wax, Prosumer is not an oblivious missionary of the absolute truth. He is an adoring DJ-at-heart who stands up for his own verity. All of that is stunningly bound in his first official mix “Panorama Bar 03” as well as continued and refined in his studio work. Whether with Murat Tepeli (deeply eternalized on their long player Serenity) or Tama Sumo for Ostgut Ton, with his own releases, while remixing other artists or in front of the microphone – this Prosumer has found his own voice already.

Alex Smoke is a Scottish talent making electronic records that blur together European minimalism, pop structures and emotional strings and pads. He has released two full length albums, ‘Incommunicado’ and ‘Paradolia’ [Soma Records] and a slew of singles and remixes, many of which have arrived on Soma and German label Vakant.

His debut release ‘Random As’ came out in January 2002, but Smoke has always been immersed in music. In his youth he sang in a choir for four years (a far cry no doubt from the mournful tones on his ‘Don’t See the Point’ or ‘Never Want to See You Again’), his parents are involved in classical music, and he has classical training in cello and piano.

Smoke’s own productions are often described as moody, a reputation he doesn’t shy away from. His debut on Soma was the euphoric ‘Chica Wappa’, described by Smoke as “undoubtedly the most optimistic track I’ll ever write. My music will never be this upbeat again.” His wish might have come true: recently Smoke’s remix work on Vakant and especially his reedit of Junior Boys ‘In the Morning’ have focused heavily on melancholic electronica, although Smoke has a noisy, brash side too, evidenced on big tracks such as ‘Meany’ and ‘Brian’s Lung’.

Smoke both performs live and DJs, and his agenda as a spinner is perhaps well represented by ‘Sci-Fi-Hi-Fi Vol. 3’ from 2006. His debut DJ mix combined a fascination with dub techno, classic Detroit (Smoke is not averse to playing old records at all) and new European minimal techno.

Alex was recently named as breakandenter’s best headliner by fan poll and we’re pleased to have him back for this auspicious occasion.

Adam Marshall – New Kanada/Cynosure/Dumb Unit – CA/DE

It has become de rigeur to talk about boundary-hopping artists, but in Marshall’s case, he’s earned his reputation as a trailblazer. Born and raised in Toronto, and now based in Berlin, he’s been active as a producer, DJ, promoter and label head for some 10 years now. But, at a point in his career where other musicians find themselves slowing down and settling into their comfort zone, Marshall seems refreshingly unencumbered by his past achievements—and equally unconstrained by the limits of the scene around him. Marshall has long been a top-notch producer, but the past few years have seen his work getting more inspired, more experimental and more confident in its own path.

It’s hard to put a name to the music Marshall is making these days. Although rooted in house and techno—particularly in its lush chords and rich, analog feel—it has just as much to do with contemporary mutations in bass music. See, for instance, his masterful “North at Night,” released in 2009 on Cynosure, which filtered resonant dub techno through skippy UK garage rhythms, featured one of the most lyrical synth leads in recent memory, and took the bold step of all but subtracting the kick drum. In his DJ sets, Marshall makes even more explicit the link between precision-tooled techno and bass music’s rhythmic trickery, playing fast, tight and dexterous. And a new sub-label, NKLTD, promises to focus even more intently on music falling outside the confines of house and techno as they’ve come to be known.

Komodo – Sambal Records – Montreal –LIVE PA

http://komododubs.com/

http://soundcloud.com/sambal

Komodo is a Montreal-based composer, musician and DJ who specializes in playing fast dub basslines on the Australian didgeridoo, producing heavy beats and bass, and playing an assortment of other instruments such as Turkish flute and frame drum. His DJ sets feature live performance on his instruments and showcase many of his original tracks produced specifically for his live shows.

In Montreal, Komodo currently runs a bass music night called Komodo Dubs that has been graced by such international electronic music luminaries as N-Type, Shackleton, Goth-Trad, Benga, 2562, Sukh Knight, RSD, and Caspa. Komodo’s brand new full-length album, entitled Shadow Dance, was released on May 24th, 2011.

Dandy Jack — Martin Schopf, alias Dandy Jack, is renowned in Chile and Germany as much as for his musical productions as for his work as an organizer in the electronic music movement. In Santiago, Chile he created the Microman club together with Adrian Schopf, which became a generating nucleus for many electronic events on an international scale. Today he’s also an active head of Mutek Chile, bringing Canada’s most interesting electronic music festival to South America. As a musician, he released many individual projects on acclaimed labels like Ratherinteresting, Perlon and Contexterrior. Schopf’s various collaboratos include Uwe Schmidt, Peter Namlook, Pink Elln, Jorge Gonzalez, Ricardo Villalobos and Luciano.

Sonja Moonear: After studying classical music in her youth, Sonja Moonear set aside the piano in favour of the turntables and bought a Roland R8. Surrounded by the Swiss mountains, Sonja immersed herself in the Geneva underground before infiltrating the ranks of the Weetamix residents in 2002. Moonear began collaborating with artists like Luciano and Dimbiman/Zip, along with Dandy Jack as Junction SM. She has acquired an impressive international reputation, playing in clubs and festivals worldwide. In the last couple of years she’s been releasing her own tracks and remixes on renowned international labels such as Karat and Perlon. She runs the label Ruta5 and organizes various events in Switzerland as well as the ever-growing Kiss Me festival.

Mike Shannon (Cynosure, Wagon Repair) – CA

Resident Advisor Soundcloud 1 Soundcloud 2 Discogs

Any historian who takes it upon themselves to pen the tale of Canadian electronic in the years to come will most certainly find the name Mike Shannon figures early and often in it’s telling. From his humble beginnings in the sleepy suburban town of Kitchener Ontario, the last 15 years have seen him become an internationally lauded producer with albums on 3 of the industry’s most respected labels (Plus 8, Force Inc, ~Scape), as well as a steady stream of consistently charted singles and remixes.

A true “DJ’s DJ”, he has won legions of fans and the respect of his peers alike for his deep crates and lightning fast mixing skills. And while some may suggest he has gravitated towards smoother, deeper selections as the years go by, those in the know will tell you he has few equals when it comes to whipping dance floors into a relentless techno frenzy should you catch him on a night with that mischievous twinkle in his eye.
Yet beyond all of this, perhaps his greatest achievement has been his unfailing support of the music and people he loves. As head A&R and damn near everything else of Cynosure and formerly Revolver Canada Recordings (alongside Jeff Milligan) for over 10 years, Mike has shown an uncanny ability to select and release tracks which have become go-to fixtures in the sets of the industry’s best DJs, as well as introducing the world to the work of some of his nearest and dearest before anyone knew their names (Akufen, Deadbeat, Ernesto Ferrerya). Far from pursuing the next one hit wonder or sound of the season, his steadfast curatorial vision and passion for the music have earned him the trust of discerning music connoisseurs the world over.

Hubble (Northern Spy Records) – NYC

Since the inception of his new solo guitar project Hubble, Ben Greenberg of Zs and Pygmy Shrews has sought to exploit the guitar for its ulterior qualities, simultaneously displaying a true love for the instrument while redefining how guitar music is understood. Whether distortion-drenched or clean, Ben describes painstaking result as “cyber-dread”, an apocalyptic, beat-less quasi-electronic music, conjuring Terry Riley’s pulsing minimalist structures and Gregg Ginn’s aggressive, avant-garde rock.

BASIC SOUL UNIT - Mule Electronics, Creme Organization – Toronto

Stuart Li aka Basic Soul Unit was born in Hong Kong and grew up in Toronto, Canada. His interest in club music started as a teenager in the late 80′s listening to Toronto’s independent radio stations and hanging out in the multicultural city’s thriving after hours warehouse parties where DJ’s were playing New York, Chicago and Detroit based house music. Working at Cosmos Records store during the late 90′s led Stuart to dig further into disco, jazz, soul, funk, Latin, Brazilian.

During the late 90’s, Stuart started Djing various musical styles at various lounges, bars and clubs in Toronto. With this wide spectrum of interest in music, Stuart’s strength as a DJ is his versatility. Depending on the night and the crowd, he can throw down Detroit influenced techno, Jacking Chicago style sounds, Soulful NYC house, pulsing minimal tracks, disco, jazz, funk, Latin, Brazilian, broken beat and sometimes even a combination of all these.

Stuart started producing as Basic Soul Unit in 2003 with his first track “Basic Soul” on Toronto’s Iwanai Music. As with his Djing style, Stuart’s music can swing from lush and soulful Detroit inspired numbers to jacking minimal beats (all with hints of above aforementioned influences). Subsequently he has released music on Left Of The Dial (Canada), Versatile Records (France), Mule Electronic (Japan) and Mathematics Recordings (US). Basic Soul Unit has been getting played and charted across a spectrum of music enthusiasts from the nujazz and broken beat crowd to deep house heads and techno aficionados.

Members_Only – Evening Standard

Paul Johnston and Adam Beck first played together at a one off event in 2005, and since then, they have not been able to quit each other, for better or worse.

They’ve mastered a varied style, which while rooted in disco, spans its derivatives.

Together they arrange and play a monthly party in Toronto called ‘Evening Standard’ which focuses on the less obvious in disco, house and techno. Members_Only have shared the bill with artists such as Soul Clap,Hunee, Eddie C, Prince Language and most recently Todd Terje.

It is/they are a good time.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS.

TIM XAVIER

Tim Xavier’s passion for music has kept him on the forefront of techno since his innovative releases on Blueline a decade ago. His career began in Houston in the 90s, and then on to Chicago, Brooklyn and now Berlin, where he has resided since 2007. He is a veteran to the industry; and his dark, edgy production style has remained uncompromised through the ever changing genres of minimal, techno, house and beyond. He is also the owner and chief engineer at Manmade Mastering in Berlin; and this sleepy-eyed coffee addict defines cool as he cuts master plates for many respected record labels.

Tim’s music has been charted and played by leading artists around the world, and he has worked with many labels such as Cocoon, Minus, Sci-Tec, Podium, Timefog, Little Helpers, Sleaze, Droid Behavior and many more. He is also the owner of his own imprint, LTD400, which encompasses his irresistible combination of quirk, funk, space and drive. Tim spray-paints his signature icon on 400 sleeves of each release, a process that he says connects him more closely to his music and audience. He also works with partner Camea on her imprint Clink Recordings, with Tony Rohr as the ‘Afternoon Coffee Boys’, and long time studio friend Par Grindvik. In 2010 Tim is releasing is first full length work on Clink, titled ‘Viperfish’, with a CD mix project to follow.

On Stage, Tim’s current performances include a mixture of DJing, Live and Effects manipulation, carrying out his vision on two laptops and several midi controllers. He creates an unforgettable experience with his maximal sound quality and music selection, in which he combines loops and pieces from his own production. He is regularly on tour and performing across the globe, capturing his audiences with groovy, driving dance music. Tim’s relentless devotion to providing cutting edge audio continues to keep him on the forefront of innovative dance music, and as he continues to grow it is apparent that we have still yet to see the best of his work.

In 2006, Kidd joined Frederik Hatsav to form Metalogic. Their collaborations have accumulated in edgy, dynamic and highly rhythmic electronic music, releasing for such labels as New York’s Addon, Brooklyn’s Hidden Agenda, London’s Perc Trax, and Berlin’s Nachtstrom Schallplatten. The duo’s ‘Boxed and Warped’, ‘Surge Stimulator’, and ‘Cabin Pressure’ EP’s were fiercely supported by artists such as Perc, Extrawelt, Cari Lekebusch, Tony Rohr, Len Faki, Phil Kieran, Alex Bau, Xpansul, Nick Warren, Frankie Bones, and John Selway.

WASEEM

Waseem Dabdoub, or simply Waseem is a new presence in Toronto’s music community. Though born and raised in the Canadian techno capital of Windsor, Ontario, Dabdoub’s sound takes its inspirational cues from 70′s disco, 80′s pop and the contemporary house and r&b revivals of artists such as Wolf + Lamb, Soul Clap and Visionquest. His smooth beats, tinged with hints at minimal techno’s trippier elements, are deeply infectious whether at the party or Teddy Pendergrassin’ it up in the bedroom.
Join breakandenter as we present the world premiere of … Waseem!
